NIBIO produces knowledge about sustainable resource management, innovation and value creation in bioeconomies – a holistic approach to the utilization and sustainance of biological resources as well as waste, that emphases circulation and re-use rather than linear exploitation. NIBIO has c.700 employee, of which 400 are researchers or educators. These are situated in local offices across the country, with broad geographical outreach. NIBIO has been involved in a few large and several hundreds small-scale such projects, both locally and across national borders.
The most prominent large projects are the EDU-ARCTIC (2016-2019) and the Phenology of the North Calotte (ongoing). The NIBIO employees will contribute with knowledge about biology (mainly about plants and animals and their interactions with the environment), placed in a socioecological and -cultural context.
